Season 2, mid-season finale — Part One. By the time the 2020 fire season ended, more than 10 million acres had burned across the American West. Eleven states were on fire simultaneously at the peak: California, Oregon, Washington, Colorado, Idaho, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, Montana, and Wyoming. Entire towns were evacuated. Skies turned red from the Pacific to the Rockies. Smoke from western fires traveled across the continent and reached the East Coast, dimming the sun over New York City. It was the worst wildfire season in modern American history.

This shirt records the season at its full scope. The back shows the western half of the United States rendered in fire and ember, the eastern half drawn in cool line work and left untouched — a visual record of which half of the country was burning. Below the map, the facts of the season are listed plainly: 10+ million acres burned. The eleven states affected. The date range — September 6 through December 18, 2020 — that marked the season's most destructive stretch.

It's a piece for everyone who lived under that smoke. For the evacuees in Oregon who watched whole towns disappear in a single night. For the Colorado families who fled in front of a fire that doubled in size in a single afternoon. For the firefighters who crossed state lines and worked rotations from one fire camp to the next. For anyone, anywhere in the country, who stepped outside that fall and saw a red sun and knew something was very wrong.

The front carries the Wildfire Edition crest — "I SURVIVED" rendered in flame and ember over a stick figure escaping a burning shelter while the numerals "2020" snarl back as fire-faced monstrosities. The shared crest ties this season together; the back tells each fire's individual story.
