Skies turned red from the Pacific to the Rockies. Smoke from western fires traveled across the continent and reached the East Coast, dimming the sun over New York City. It was the worst wildfire season in modern American history.

The back shows the western half of the United States rendered in fire and ember, the eastern half drawn in cool line work and left untouched — a visual record of which half of the country was burning.
